Hier vindt U een prachtige presentatie over de ramp die zich 55 jaar geleden in mijn stad Oostende voordeed.
Na een dijkbreuk overstroomden stukken van Nederland en ook de oude Oostendse binnenstad moest eraan geloven. Bemerk ook (we spreken immers 1953)
de hoofdzakelijk Franse uithangborden in de stad. De muziek die U erbij hoort is 'Ostende oender woater', waarvan de Oostendse
tekst gemaakt werd op het Frans liedje 'La petite diligence', uitvoerder is de zingende brandweerman Bertino, in het
dagelijkse leven Albert 'Berten' Lingier, in de volksmond ook gekend als 'Berten Schuuffelet' (hij droeg steeds een strikje), ook soms als
'Schele Lingier'. Hij maakte trouwens de Oostendse tekst, hij was een gekende volksfiguur die jammer genoeg veel te vroeg overleed (3 mei 1969,
hij was amper 53). Naast "Op de vissemart zienk ik geboren" (Ook al gemaakt op een Frans liedje 'Du Gris') was en is
"Ostende oender woater" ook een pareltje van Oostendse folklore.

We have here a beautiful presentation about the disaster which struck my town, Ostend on February 1st, 1953. The opening of the presentation says:
'Oostende onder water' (Ostend under water) and on the opening screen it says the following:
"Through the ages, Ostend has always had to fight the violence of the sea. Storms have often destroyed the coast and the strip of land
which used to be in front of the coastline between Ostend and Westende, and which was called DE STREEP (the stripe) was
bit by bit completely swallowed by the waves. The last big storm was on February 1st, 1953, when, during the night of January 31st-February 1st,
the entire old inner city of Ostend was flooded."
The music you hear is a song about this event, it was originally a French song, but a popular Ostend singer/comedian called
Bertino, wrote lyrics in the Ostend dialect to it. Also notice (we are talking 1953, after all), the predominantly French
noticeboards.

ze door een Vlaams koppel racistisch behandeld en gemolesteerd werd. Let op de bewoordingen van de reporters, die op geen
enkel ogenblik spreken van 'naar het schijnt', of, 'er wordt beweerd', doch de feiten als volledige waarheid voorstellen
en de vrouw gewoon haar relaas laten doen zonder enige onderbreking of vraag. Naderhand bleken de beweringen van de vrouw
niet zo waarheidsgetrouw te zijn, doch er kwam geen rechtzetting, nog een recht van antwoord voor het beschuldigde koppel.
The VTM report of 30/03/2008 about an African lady, complaining about having been racially abused and physically molested by a
Flemish couple. Notice the choice of words of both reporters, not once do they say 'it is alleged', or, 'it seems', everything is
depicted as proven facts.Furthermore, they just let the woman tell her story, without any interruption or question from any reporter.
Later, the woman's allegations did not seem to be very close to the truth, yet, there was no correction in the news, nor did the
accused couple get their say.
